PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — October 27, 2026. Placer County supervisors approved a memorandum of agreement with the University of California Regents on behalf of UC Davis and the Tahoe Environmental Research Center to explore potential science, education and community facilities in Tahoe City.
How the project or program works
The county identified underused properties including the former Tahoe City Fire Station 51 by Commons Beach, a community center building and the 10,654-square-foot Bechdolt building opposite the fire station. The Tahoe Environmental Research Center already runs a science center and lab in Incline Village, Nevada. The new concept is intended to combine public educational access, science and local community activities.
What residents should verify
The October 21 news release documents an exploratory agreement, not a signed construction contract, secured capital budget or scheduled opening. The properties listed are possible sites rather than a final approved building plan. Local residents can follow future board decisions and community outreach.
